Northern Satellites

Driving through Finland, we played a simple game – count the reindeer. In the south it was easy: one, maybe two ghost-horned wanderers between the trees. But as we crossed the Arctic Circle and pushed toward Nordkapp, the rules broke. Whole herds appeared – twenty, thirty at a time – moving like quiet spirits across the tundra.

When we finally reached the northernmost edge of Europe, the wind came at us like it wanted to peel the world open. We hid in the van, wondering if this was the end of the road or just the test before the gift.

Then, just before sunset, the wind finally fell quiet. We stepped out into the soft golden light, walking through the short grass as the reindeer settled in for the coming night.

A small moment, maybe – but one of those memories that settles into you and stays.
