She By The Sea

Just as we drove in, the owner hung a scrappy rope with a sign that read completo. We got the last spot at the far end of the lot. Lucky, we thought – though we didn’t yet know how lucky.

The end of the lot turned out to be the heart of the place. Like the cool kids at the back of the bus, we were surrounded by friendly, fascinating strangers.

The wind was wild that day, but the ocean – just 250 meters away – was calling. Ten minutes through the dunes and we stood on a cliff above furious, crashing waves; the gusts pushing us back, the horizon pulling us forward.

In that moment, I knew: Portugal would be the perfect beginning of our journey’s end.

With the wind screaming through my ears, I leaned closer to the edge. Below, a solitary was walking through the sand – a speck of calm in all that chaos. Perfect shot, I thought, and the camera shutter clicked.
