It felt like Italy herself was watching us, quietly curious, so I took her portrait.
This was the first place on our European road where freedom truly arrived.
We stopped on a hill beneath a great oak, alone in the Tuscan fields.
For three days we lived in its shade – reading, eating, waving at smiling farmers rolling past in tractors.
Life felt simple, and that was enough.
